Every month, we rack our brains to come up with a prompt for our art contest.
Sometimes they are broad and open to interpretation, like the prompts from our Big and Hidden contests.
And sometimes they are very specific, like the prompt from our “The experiment worked! Penny was so relieved to have her dog back from the dead” contest.
But this month, we are handing the reins over to YOU. This is your chance to make something YOU love. It’s in keeping with the Slowvember art challenge, where you spend the whole month of November making something you 💖 for your portfolio.
If you’re not sure how to do Slowvember, here’s a week-by-week approach (Lee White, the creator of Slowvember, goes into more detail in this video):
Week 1: Research and development. This is all about finding inspiration, no output at this stage! Find art that you love, and do Lee’s art questionnaire.
Week 2: Thumbnails, value studies, color comps. This stage is for trying out different compositions and designs and seeing if they really work. If you follow Lee’s YouTube, then you’ll know that he recommends you do at least 50 thumbnails before deciding on a composition. Explore the options!
Week 3: Paint and evaluate. You’ve done the legwork, now it’s time to go to a finish. Make the image, then evaluate. Is it working? Are there problem areas? Get feedback!
Week 4: Paint the final! And enjoy the process 😄
You can choose any subject matter, and any media. Just be sure it’s a project that is true to you!

Post your final illustration on the SVS Forum, in the competition thread titled: NOVEMBER CONTEST: SLOWVEMBER. Be sure to keep this thread for final images only. If you want feedback on a WIP (that’s short for Work In Progress), create a new thread. Note: You will need to be logged in as a user on the Forum in order to post. If you don’t already have a user account, it’s free to create one 😀
Keep the file size to no more than 500 kb.
Don’t forget to include your name AND Forum name ON THE IMAGE so we can give you credit! And if you want us to tag you, include your handle too. This saves us a lot of time in the end when we are trying to give credit.
Only submit if you are OK with us posting your image on our social media and website for the whole world to see 👀🌎 And only submit if you are OK with receiving a critique from our judges during a live event, which will be recorded and added to our video subscription 🧐
