KEY TAKEAWAYS
Succeeding in illustration requires you to learn who you are and become comfortable in your own skin so you can make work you’re proud of.
What you say is less important than what you do. Focus on creating a disciplined work ethic, and you’ll naturally attract like-minded people who will help you grow.
In art, business, and life, use your intuition to guide your choices.
Cátia Chen is a Brazilian-Tawainese concept artist and illustrator of children’s books and comics. Graduating from Art Center College of Design with honors in 2004, she began creating gallery work before joining Nickelodeon, where she spent two years as a color stylist while working on children’s books during the weekends. Today, she has illustrated seven children’s books (most recently The Longest Letsgoboy) and created concept work for two animated films. She lives with her husband and son in California.
