So you want to be an illustrator? Here are some key things to consider when building your website

Art by Marissa Valdez.

Yes, as a creative, you 100% need a website!

Your website is the online extension of your personality. It’s where potential clients, fans and colleagues go to get a sense of who you are and what kind of illustration work you do. It’s one of the most important tools you have to market yourself to the world! 🌎

In the latest episode of our podcast, we go over some important things to consider when building your portfolio website, from the illustrator point of view. These come from our experiences through many iterations of websites!

Here’s a brief summary of what we cover:

  • What is the main purpose of your website? Selling a service? Looking for work? Building a fanbase?

  • How many finished portfolio pieces should you have before creating your website?

  • How do you know when you’re ready for your own website?

  • What platform should you host your website on? A community platform like Artstation or Deviant Art? Or an individual platform like Wix, Squarespace or Wordpress? Some of these have free versions if you are just getting started!

  • Should you get a domain name, and if so what should it be? Be sure to pick something simple and easy to spell, and consider using the same name for both your business and domain!

  • What should you put on your homepage? How should you showcase your portfolio?

  • What other features should you include on your website? Should you have a blog? Should you do a newsletter?
