How To Develop Your Artistic Style

Art by Marek Halko.

How do you find your own artistic style? For some it just evolves naturally, but for others it can cause a whole lot of angst πŸ˜πŸ˜΅πŸ˜“

In the latest episode of our podcast, we talk all about style! We evaluate each other’s styles, share our artistic influences, discuss ways to foster your own style, and examine the importance of style as it relates to your career goals.

Plus, we talk about how style develops. Should you wait for it to bubble up naturally from within? Or should you take matters into your own hands? Traditional art schools often seem to side with letting style develop on its own, without conscious effort. But we tend to be more deliberate about crafting our own artistic styles from all the artists that influence us.

We also share a strategy for developing your own artistic style! The short version: find five of your favorite artists, analyze their style, and do straight up copies of their work, or do illustrations as if you were that artist. Then put all your reference away and create something from within, and that is your style! Of course, it can change over time as you change too 😊
