KEY TAKEAWAYS
Take chances and try things. Don’t hold yourself back from illustrating, writing, starting a business, or anything else simply because you don’t have a college degree in the subject.
Leap, then learn to fly. Leverage what resources you have, and you’ll discover more along the way.
Each new venture- whether successful or not- will give you experience and inform your future choices. Don’t let fear prevent you from starting something new; be willing to try things, adapt, and learn from trial and error. Things have a way of coming together down the road for people who just keep moving.
Bio
Michael M. Clements is a Washington, D.C.-based entrepreneur, outsider artist, illustrator, and writer. In 2008 he founded ArtJamz, an award-winning paint-and-sip business inspired by a late night painting and drinking with a group of friends. From 2012 to 2020, ArtJamz enabled nearly 200,000 people to unleash their inner artists.
With the unforeseen changes of 2020, Michael pivoted his business model. Closing his retail locations, he launched At-Home Paint Kits and ArtJamz Virtual Experiences, allowing the company to continue fulfilling its mission in new ways. He believes that as long as you stay true to your mission, you can change your medium to meet your needs and the needs of those you serve.
Michael is currently working on a book titled “Gen Exiled: Dispatches from an Analog Age,” a collection of poetry, illustrations, art, and memorabilia from the 1990s, before the internet overran the world. Look for it in the spring of 2022!
